How Do You Win Customers You Can't See?

A regional telecom operator needed to compete more effectively for subscriber acquisition in a mature market. LeadIcon deployed a behavioural intelligence framework that identified anonymous prospects, attached demographic data to 100% of returning users, and pinpointed the optimal marketing mix for converting competitor subscribers.

Proof of Concept — Acquisition Intelligence
01 — The Challenge

Competing for subscribers in a market with no visibility.

The telecom operator held a strong market position in a region with limited direct competition — but faced a fundamental data problem. While it knew its existing customer base well, it had virtually no intelligence on prospective subscribers who had never transacted with the organisation. These non-customers were visiting the website, engaging with digital content, and responding to campaigns — yet remaining entirely anonymous.

Without the ability to identify or segment these non-transactional visitors, the marketing team was running acquisition campaigns blind. Campaign targeting was broad, spend was difficult to justify, and there was no reliable way to identify which prospective customers were actually close to switching or subscribing. The competitor's prepaid subscriber base represented a clear opportunity — but the organisation lacked the intelligence to go after it with precision.

The business required a proof of concept that could demonstrate the value of a behavioural intelligence layer before committing to a full platform deployment.

Core Problems Identified
  • No intelligence on prospective subscribers who had never transacted
  • Anonymous web traffic lacked any acquisition signal data
  • Existing CRM contained only confirmed customers — not prospects
  • Campaign targeting was broad with no intent-based segmentation
  • No model to identify competitor subscriber acquisition opportunities
Business Impact (Pre-Engagement)
  • Acquisition campaigns lacked predictive targeting accuracy
  • Marketing spend could not be tied to subscriber intent signals
  • Competitor prepaid base was an untapped, invisible opportunity
  • No demographic intelligence on high-value non-customer segments
  • Limited ability to personalise acquisition outreach at scale
02 — Our Approach

The Iconic Engine deployed in 4 phases

LeadIcon designed a Proof of Concept that demonstrated the full acquisition intelligence capability — from anonymous traffic mapping through to CRM-linked prospect identification — before any commitment to long-term deployment was required.

01
Foundational Intelligence — Behavioural Traffic Mapping
All returning website visitors were mapped based on behavioural signals including session depth, page engagement, return frequency, and campaign-response patterns. This analysis established a clear behavioural segmentation of the anonymous traffic pool — separating casual browsers from acquisition-ready prospects with high-intent engagement signals.
02
Strategic Pathways — Demographic Enrichment & Prospect Segmentation
Demographic intelligence was attached to all returning anonymous user profiles — including estimated age, location, device type, and behavioural characteristics aligned with known high-value subscriber archetypes. This created a segmented prospect universe that could be targeted with precision rather than broad reach.
03
System Execution — Campaign Intelligence & Competitor Acquisition Targeting
The enriched prospect intelligence was mapped against existing campaign performance data to identify which marketing mixes had the highest probability of converting the competitor's prepaid subscriber base. Targeted acquisition sequences were designed based on intent signal strength and demographic alignment — replacing broad reach with precision targeting.
04
Full-Spectrum Measurement — Customer Match & Attribution Analytics
The identified prospect database was cross-referenced against the existing customer database to find overlap. The analysis revealed that 27% of anonymous web visitors could be linked to known existing subscribers — enabling precision lifecycle marketing, upsell identification, and retention intelligence alongside net-new acquisition.
"Web behaviour data variables mapped with subscribers to convert anonymous website visits into named prospects — and reveal the optimal acquisition mix for targeting the competitor's prepaid base."
